According to the 2000 Census, the city is at the heart of the 13th fastest growing metropolitan area in the U.S. The metropolitan population is counted at 196,629 in 2000. Combining all three counties (Horry, Georgetown, and Brunswick, North Carolina), the metro population is 346,548.Of course, the Atlantic Ocean is the number one attraction and the #1 reason so many families visit Myrtle Beach year after year.  Our clean, wide beaches are extremely inviting.  Myrtle Beach also offers a wealth of recreation, entertainment, dining, shopping and vacation opportunities for visitors and tourists. For this reason, the Myrtle Beach Area attracts over 14 million visitors a year. Myrtle Beach kicks off its summer season each year with the Sun Fun Festival at the beginning of June.

North Myrtle Beach is still known for the Shag Dance that started back in the 1930s. The Myrtle Beach area also remains the golf capital of the world with over 110 well known golf courses.
